el-Hadra
by Ted de Jong, Klaus Wiese and Mathias Grassow
Tabla, zither and keyboards are used to create mesmerizing Sufi meditation music on this extended composition by Wiese, who notes, "The pulse of the rhythm is of great importance here because it corresponds with the breath and the heartbeat at the same time." Beginning with slow rhythmic pulsations, the music invites us to enter the timeless trance. As the tabla drums commence their enticing cadence, a single strum of the zither rings out an invitation to the soul to embrace the music. Gradually the graceful rhythms irresistibly draw us deeper into the blissful and serene abandon of the mystic dance. Reviewed by Lakshmana Simpson.
