How does meditation work? Superconsciousness, a state above our everyday conscious awareness, is a realm of inspiration, creativity, and insights, and the deep peace and joy that we all seek. This state can be accessed by combining deep relaxation and concentration with dynamic awareness.
In his book Meditation For Starters, J. Donald Walters, tells us that in this superconscious state, we are not creating answers but are receiving answers. In prayer, we talk to God. In meditation, we listen for his answer. The essential attitude for correct meditation is one of listening.
The mind needs to be open and receptive. The spine, straight and the attention is focused at the Christ center or the point between the eyebrows.
Meditation techniques are the tools that help us learn how to meditate. These techniques are available from many different spiritual paths. You can find out about these paths through books, audio tapes, videos and classes. Classes are especially beneficial because the student enjoys the support of a qualified teacher and the collective vibrations of a group meditating together. After your class, finding an ongoing meditation group is also helpful. It is usually easier to go into the superconscious state quickly with experienced meditators.
