Weddings
Into The Garden
A Wedding Anthology
Edited by Robert Haas and Stephen Mitchell
Two master translators of spiritual prose and poetry were asked often to recommend poetry for weddings. As a response to these inquiries, they edited a book full of poems and prose from different countries, cultures, authors and eras. One Portland, Oregon couple, married on Christmas eve, took only moments to choose "The Mind of Absolute Trust" for the central reading at their wedding. This core reading highlighted the spiritual goals of the Bride and Groom. Including this meaningful poem in their wedding added a special sparkle to an already dazzling evenng. One could easily choose an inspired passage from A Wedding by Boris Pasternak or a phrase from the Shoshone Wedding Song. What distinguishes this book is the in depth background of the editors in spiritual awareness. One poem by a Japanese woman points to the subtlety of spiritual choice: "As I dig for wild orchids in the Autumn fields, it is the deeply-bedded root that I desire, not the flower." A wonderful gift! An inspiration for officiants, couples and anyone who desires to be inspired by the writings of love! Reviewed by Jacqueline Mandell.
