This revolutionary book will rearrange your brain and alter your worldview as to the nature of time, human history, and the evolution of human consciousness and civilization. The Yugas describes four ages or yugas that repeat in a 24,000 year cycle of time: Kali, Dwapara, Treta, and Satya, each with its own level of awareness. Right now we're in Dwapara Yuga, the age of energy, which began in 1700 and will continue until 4100. Dwapara Yuga is characterized by self interest, energy awareness, and awakened intellect.

Dwapara Yuga Technology is focused on "space annihilators" like our rapidly evolving communications and transportation technologies. Before Dwapara came Kali Yuga, the material or darkest age, which began in 700 B.C. and ended in 1700.

After Dwapara is over in 4100, we can look forward to Treta Yuga, the age of thought where humans are focused on self-mastery through mastering thought and technology is focused on "time annihilators." And then, heaven on earth--Satya Yuga, the age of enlightenment in which most of humanity is focused on spiritual growth and the Divine can be perceived directly.

The Yugas is based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda and his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar, who in India, 1894, published The Holy Science. That book outlined in the introduction the Yuga Theory and predicted that the keynote scientific discovery of the 20th century would be that matter is composed of "fine matters and electricities." This came before Einstein's publication in 1905 of the Theory of Relativity, including E=MC2, that energy and matter are equivalent.

Reading The Yugas filled me with hope for human beings on planet earth. What we are taught from the history books, the last 3000 years or so, represents only 12.5% of the entire 24,000 year cycle of the yugas and that 12.5% represents the darkest and lowest stages of human evolution. We have nowhere to go but up for the next 10,489 years!

In visualizing to the best of our abilities, along with the authors, what the higher ages of Treta and Satya Yuga might be like we perhaps get some inkling of the vast potential of the human being for further evolution and refinement. As Yogananda once said, "Evolution is endless."

The Yugas helps to put the turmoil, violence and troubles of our times into perspective. It offers a vision of our times not as an apocalyptic ending but as a natural and organic process of growth and development like the teenage years before one settles into mature adulthood.

Sri Yukteswar reminds us that just as the planet as a whole goes through the four levels of awareness of the four yugas each individual will also pass through and comprehend the levels of awareness of the four yugas in their spiritual journey: awareness of matter in Kali, life force in Dwapara, divine magnetism in Treta, and Spirit in Satya. We can also jump ahead of the Yuga of our times for it represents only the average level of awareness of all humans on the planet at any one time.

For example right now in Dwapara Yuga, we can develop sensitive awareness and self mastery concerning the power of thought that would characterize Treta Yuga or we could develop the outer simplicity and inner devotion to spiritual development that would characterize Satya Yuga.
